A Voice for Change

Joan Woods is a New York City-born novelist and memoir writer. Currently, she is completing her first novel, A Splinter of Hope, a social protest novel that captures highlights of the civil rights movement and the era of the Black Panther Party. The main character, Mina, an African-American teenager struggles with race and gender issues in the late sixties. On the home front, family troubles have begun to emerge. She not only struggles with overcoming the realities of surviving in an impoverished neighborhood, Mina also faces her father's severe mental illness, and her mother's ambition to become an actress while simultaneously grappling with a profound addiction.

Ms. Woods began to write in her early teens, when she discovered a world of books that deeply touched her because they explored relevant and provocative issues of the times.  She became immersed in any book she could find that delved into the journey of the black experience in America. It was at this time that she gathered the courage to give voice to her own passion for writing. Her desire is now coming full circle. She hopes her first novel is enlightening and entertaining. Her first novel treat issues that are not easy to write about but are as relevant and timely now as they were in the sixties.

In May 2018, Ms. Woods received an MFA in Creative Writing from Queens University of Charlotte. In addition, she holds an MSW from the School of Social Welfare, University of California, Los Angeles. When she is not writing, Ms. Woods loves hiking, trekking the globe, and whipping up gourmet meals for her family and friends.
